I know some of you are film fans, so might be able to help me.

As I've mentioned, I have two and a half months to learn some Spanish. I thought it would be a good idea to add some films to Spanish to my screenselect account. So far I've added The Devil's Backbone, Cronos (not currently available), Maria Full of Grace, and Like Water for Chocolate. Spanish-language movies I've seen recently include the original of Vanilla Sky, Bad Education and The Motorcycle Diaires.

Any more recommendations? Latin American suggestions are particularly welcome.

Cable TV in Toronto had CNN en Espanol, but there's no spanish language station here, which sucks, as kids shows would probably be the way forward.

El Mariachi, the first in the trilogy that continued with Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

I'd forgotten about that. I think I've seen Desperado.

The Cronos 10th anniversary edition is available on DVD for about £10. Might be R1, though. Otherwise - any Pedro Almodovar movies, really.

(What's Screenselect?)

Screenselect is the online DVD rental service that I use.

Accion Mutante.

El Patrullero.

You'll hate both of them, I should think.

Good Lord. I didn't know anyone else had been to see that. (Apart from [livejournal.com profile] jarkman)

Haven't seen it for at least 10 years, admittedly, but I currently have [livejournal.com profile] drpete's VHS copy on my "to watch" pile. But IIRC think I preferred Day of the Beast, by the same guy.

Me either. That was a time when maintaining my cultural life meant abandoning the Stella-fired houseshare in Middle-of-nowhere, Glos, and driving to Chapter in Cardiff at least once a month to view whatever mad bloody film they'd put on. (Well, driving as far as Pontypool and then blagging a lift w/[livejournal.com profile] jarkman in fact.)

What about films by Pedro Almodóvar?

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown is one of my faves by him.

I've seen most of them. I think I preferred All About My Mother (or whichever is the one that opens and closes with babies being born on new Year's Eve in Madrid), but I'm trying to work on vocabulary that doesn't involve prostitution & drag queens...

Ah, Almodovar is probably not for you then... ;)

I can heartily recommend "Accion Mutante" - it's completely warped, tasteless and O.T.T. but a very fun ride.

Also, "Santa Sangre" although neither of these films are suitable for afternoon tea and scones with the vicar.
