Last night I unpacked all the books I acquired at FantasyCon. This is the first time they've all been in one place. There's an awful lot. I'd take a picture to show y'all, but you'd mock me.

Guess I'm a little more depressed and disinhibited than I thought.

As far as I'm concerned, it was totally worth it, hanging out in an atmosphere where people were so damn excited about and committed to what they love, and sharing expertise to help others get into that world. I've never been to a mainstream literary festival, but I can't imagine it being so inspiring at all. Seriously. I haven't been able to write for years - the verbal centres of my brain are friend and on bad days I can't even string a sentence together, but I came away really wanting to start writing again.

In other news, I'm coming down with a really nasty cold. Not impressed.

I'm not a writer and it makes me want to write. Cons like this are so different from music fests-I forget just how good they can be.
So, how many books did you get in total?
I bought 4 and the rest were either won in the raffle or freebies.

I haven't counted. Because then I might have to admit that I have a problem.
Having said that, I just came across someone who has over 130 unread books, so I feel relatively sensible now.

There were quite a few freebies too, but the only ones I'm that bothered about are the one by that Greek guy (I'm always interested in reading stuff in translation to see what the non-Anglo world is writing about), and the Raymond Feist one.

Don't be ashamed of buying books! You deserve them.

It's great when you want to write, isn't it? I've been unable to *read* for ages - possibly owing to the fact that reading (and correcting inept work from freelancers) is what I do for a living, and possibly because I get in the car to go to work at 7:30am and get home at 7pm on a good day nowadays. I've come back from holiday wanting to read, and it's brilliant.

If you can't string a sentence together, write anyway and claim you were inspired by James Joyce ;)

I'd be really gutted if I was unable to read; it's the only thing I enjoy that I can still do, if not as effectively as usual. I miss stuff, and forget things half an hour after I've read them, but science says the brain is a use it or lose it thing, so I'd probably be in a lot more trouble if I didn't try to give it some regular food. My mother thinks I should be content to read nothing more challenging than crappy thrillers, but I refuse to see chronic illness as a reason to stop learning.

What I don't do much of these days is listen to music (my concentration levels are so poor, I can no longer listen to music, even classical, while I'm reading, even aforesaid crappy thrillers. That bothers me a lot.

PS Red panda love!
