The plot wasn't all that exciting, but it's worth it for the visuals. The completely un-real mythic landscape is perfect. I thought the little leather shorts the Spartans all wear were the gayest thing I've seen since Dontatello's David, but then along came Xerxes and his alarmingly camp gold shorts, and promptly the leather shorts were relegated to third place.

Speaking of Xerxes, was he a Goa'uld or what? [1] Specifically, Apophis. He even had the voice.

Overall worth the effort to see in the cinema - I suspect on the small screen I would have been left going "what's the point"

[1] If you don't watch Stargate, you probably won't get it.

I'm with you on that. One bit of me was objecting that it didn't look like Greece, and the people mostly didn't look or sound Greek. I set that aside and enjoyed the fact that it was nonetheless striking and a good story. And I think it did a good job of representing how the Greeks must have seen the Persians.

But I can see why the Iranian government wasn't tickled about it.

Yeah. Being the bad guys is one thing, but the main bad guy being a great big gay character from a TV sci-fi show is quite another.
