Started in the attempt to get rid of the wallpaper. Decided the only way to go is renting a steamer, otherwise it will take weeks. Now wishing all those tool rental places near my house hadn't shut down.

Unfortunately this has unearthed another job I need to do - or rather, pay someone else to do. The ceiling. It's awful. There's no point doing the rest of the room properly if the ceiling is still awful, & it makes more sense to have it done before everything else, especially the floor. I'm not even trying to do that myself. Don't know where to start, but there's lots of tradesmen recommended on the intranet at work so I'll have a look there on Monday.

This reads remarkably like I've become a Proper Homeowner. Don't tell the people who are contracted to off me if that ever happens.

I hurt a bit now, but I can't remember the last time I had this much energy. Seriously - maybe the mid-90s?

Steamers are only twenty-ish quid to buy (Earlex good). As they're only a bucket with a heating element in, once you have a heating element as big as the mains supply permits, then that's as good as it gets. An "industrial" steamer might look bigger, heavier and will probably survive a fall downstairs, but it works no better.

What's also worth having is a spiked hedgehog. This is a set of spikey wheels under a plastic shell that you use to perforate the paper first. Also some good steam-proof and long gloves.

You're welcome to borrow my steamer, if there's any way to get it over from Aztec West or Clifton?

I can ask Jason how far out of his way it is to go to Aztec West on his way home from Chippenham.

I work in Downend without car so am not placed to do anything useful.

Alternatively, if they're that cheap, I might buy my own, because eventually the wallpaper downstairs all needs to go too.

I think I have a steamer in the garage. Alternatively David has one. Sure he'll lend it

I want to get started (and ideally finished) this coming weekend, so if you have one in the garage, great, otherwise I think I'll buy one.

We got woodchip off with a steamer (atually layers of vinal wallpaper, paint, more paint, woodchip, then more paint as I recall...)

Thankfully there's only one layer of wallpaper that hasn't been painted on in the room I'm doing now.

Downstairs, I suspect it's going to be more like you describe.
