I had my eyes tested recently, and they told me I'm just on the cusp of needing reading glasses, and that with my prescription, varifocals are not recommended.

The practicalities of my life are such that switching between two pairs of glasses is not an option.

I'm willing to try varifocals - I'm going to go talk to the people at Specsavers tomorrow. I don't have £300 to spend to try something that probably won't work, but one of my colleagues believes they do a free trial.

Which leaves me with laser eye surgery. It won't correct the age-related stuff, but means I'd only have to have reading glasses. It's another expensive option which may not work.

You hear the horror stories, but also good things. I know that [livejournal.com profile] the_siobhan has had it done, but I'm open to hearing experiences, good & bad, from others, especially anyone that's had it done in the UK. I've left this post unlocked in case any of you know people who can be pointed in this direction.

Some people who get LASIK at an older age take the option of getting one eye corrected for the myopia and the other for the presbyopia. I think that would personally drive me crazy, but it might be something to consider. You can test drive it with contacts.

That's what Siobhan got, and I think I'd come down on the side of the crazy. Also, I've only just got to needing the reading glasses so it might be likely to change again soon.

It did take about a week to get used to. And when I'm really really tired sometimes my brain takes longer to remember to adjust for the difference. But overall I don't really notice it.

Keep in mind that if you get one eye adjusted and you decide it's not working for you you can always go back and get the second one done later.

[livejournal.com profile] the_siobhan's experience was that she adjusted to it very quickly.

The brain is a wonderful thing in that regard.
