One of the good things about living in Bristol is that Ron Hutton lives here, and if you're paying attention he does occasional lectures outside the university setting.

Last night I went to see him give a talk at Arnos Vale cemetery on traditional seasonal festivals.

He was completely captivating, as always, and effectively separated the documentable from the mistakes and the made-up.

I've only read one of his books but really need to make an effort to get hold of more of them. Especially the one on seasonal festivals.

Oddly (well, not that oddly, I suppose) I was talking to a French woman about that last night in the pub. Sounds like I should recommend she chases his work up a little. She also wanted to know about such things in France, of course. Don't suppose he touches on that at all?

I don't know whether it features in his books, but last night he went into some generalities about how the traditions are the same or different in various parts of Europe.
