Police want new powers to deal with aftermath of terror attack

It's the "banning demonstrations and travel" that's more than just a bit worrying.

Canadians - is any of this happening in Canada? I can't see any evidence in the Globe & Mail. Is Canada on high terrorist alert? I'm still kinda unclear whether it's the whole Western world or just Britain & the US.

Candians don't have congrescritters - we also have MPs. I haven't lived there in so long I don't even know which constituency I should write to - the place I grew up (party in charge - Rednecks R Us), the place I went to university (oh dear god, no), the part of Toronto I actually lived in or the part of Toronto I aspire to move to. (or indeed the part of Toronto I'm more likely to end up in).

There has been talk of ID cards, but the idea isn't going over very well.

Other than increased security at airports and events like G7 meetings, there has been no mention at all of restricting travel or the right to demonstrate.

Yeah, I'd seen both of those. But is the country on "high terror alert"? We're being told daily to expect an attack on London immanently.

Threaten to fine an activist and they'll laugh in your face. Threaten to confiscate their dog on a piece of string and that will get their attention ;) You need to think more along the lines of what these new powers will actually be used for, not what they're intended for.

Then again, perhaps I'm just getting more and more cynical in my old age =)
