Police want new powers to deal with aftermath of terror attack

It's the "banning demonstrations and travel" that's more than just a bit worrying.

Canadians - is any of this happening in Canada? I can't see any evidence in the Globe & Mail. Is Canada on high terrorist alert? I'm still kinda unclear whether it's the whole Western world or just Britain & the US.

I so want out of this damn country.

And was it Heinlein or Banks that said that any society advanced enough to have ID cards ought to be left in favour of one less advanced?

Sounds more like Banks.

Heinlein would have written, "Any society advanced enough to have ID cards ought to be left in favour of invading another one and imposing ID cards on them too"

Don't complain about Blunkett until you've prodded your own congresscritter (We might let Jodi and Gothpat off here). Takes 5 minutes, just think of it as an LJ post and get it done !

"Dear MP. Blunkett goes or I'm voting for Michael Howard - he's nicer"

Candians don't have congrescritters - we also have MPs. I haven't lived there in so long I don't even know which constituency I should write to - the place I grew up (party in charge - Rednecks R Us), the place I went to university (oh dear god, no), the part of Toronto I actually lived in or the part of Toronto I aspire to move to. (or indeed the part of Toronto I'm more likely to end up in).

I think you're correct - it's the one where he's immortal, yes? (The book certainly seemed to go on forever, but then I've never been a big fan).

There has been talk of ID cards, but the idea isn't going over very well.

Other than increased security at airports and events like G7 meetings, there has been no mention at all of restricting travel or the right to demonstrate.

Well, other than by the Toronto Cheif of Police, but he's a wingnut.

Yeah, I'd seen both of those. But is the country on "high terror alert"? We're being told daily to expect an attack on London immanently.

Pfft.

No. Our current government is considerably less given to "rule by panic".

and what about "confiscating animals?" What risk do they pose, ffs???

Threaten to fine an activist and they'll laugh in your face. Threaten to confiscate their dog on a piece of string and that will get their attention ;) You need to think more along the lines of what these new powers will actually be used for, not what they're intended for.

Then again, perhaps I'm just getting more and more cynical in my old age =)
